07/05/2009 - Denver, CO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Young hit a pinch-hit, three-run double in Arizona's six-run eighth inning, as the Diamondbacks rallied for an 11-7 decision over the Rockies in the middle installment of a three-game series.
Stephen Drew belted a two-run homer in the pivotal frame and fell a single short of the cycle, while Gerardo Parra had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI in the win, Arizona's second in its past 10 games.
The rally made a winner of Scott Schoeneweis (1-0), who fanned Todd Helton with a runner on second to end the seventh. Yusmiero Petit, activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game, lasted just three innings, getting touched for four runs on five hits and two walks in a no-decision.
Joel Peralta (0-2) was charged with five runs allowed on three hits and two walks, recording just one out in the eighth. Aaron Cook, vying for his sixth straight win, surrendered three runs -- two earned -- on nine hits in five- plus innings of work. He exited in the sixth after getting the wind knocked out of him following a diving defensive stop.
Clint Barmes went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, and Ian Stewart added a two-run double for Colorado, which has split its last six games.
Peralta couldn't hang on to Colorado's 4-3 lead in the eighth, allowing consecutive one-out doubles by Miguel Montero and Parra, the latter tying the game. Peralta walked the next two and was mercifully pulled after Young stepped in fresh off the bench and one-hopped the left-field wall.
Parra and Chad Tracy scored easily and Felipe Lopez slid by Chris Iannetta's poor tag at the plate, suddenly giving the D-Backs a 7-4 lead.
Randy Flores emerged from the bullpen and was greeted by Drew's two-run homer to right, but the Rockies wouldn't go quietly with three in the bottom half.
Clay Zavada loaded the bases with two outs and yielded a two-run, pinch-hit single to Seth Smith. Dexter Fowler followed with an RBI base hit off Tony Pena before Chad Qualls got Barmes to line softly to short, ending the frame.
The Colorado bullpen gave two runs back in the ninth. Matt Daley filled the bases -- with the help of Smith's error in left -- and Lopez singled to right to knock in a pair.
Qualls set down the Rockies in order in the ninth to finish off his 14th save of the year.
Barmes hit a solo blast in the first frame and doubled in Fowler in the third, which also featured Stewart's two-run double for a 4-0 Colorado lead.
Mark Reynolds led off the fourth with his 23rd home run of the year, and the D-Backs continued to chip away at their deficit with back-to-back doubles by Drew and Alex Romero in the fifth, the latter making it 4-2.
Helton tried scoring from first on a double by Brad Hawpe in the bottom half, but was thrown out at the plate by Drew.
Cook made a diving stop to his left on Parra's grounder leading off the sixth but threw the ball into right field for a three-base error. He left the game after getting the wind knocked out of him, and Parra scored on Tracy's groundout with Alan Embree on the hill.
Game Notes
The game was delayed 27 minutes due to rain...Petit was shelved following a 5-4 loss to Washington on May 8, sustaining a strained right shoulder...A combined 13 pitchers were used, seven by Arizona, which had nine extra-base hits, compared to four by the Rockies.
